BIOGRAPHY – Samantha Thompson (nee Biddle)

Born 1978 - Sydney, Australia (Parents from CA, USA)

“I am increasing find myself at odds with my own style”

Born from a mother that has great comical expression, and a great eye for colour, Samantha’s style bends neatly into these two restrains. Despite her best efforts, she can make no marks that don’t reflect this. Her creative style is so organic, that she never remembered a time that she didn’t have it. Her work has developed over 20 years of professional practice from large scale pastel works celebrating the female form and attitude, to big works in oil and acrylic on canvas. Woven into these years she has worked with textiles and printmaking and indulged in mixed media.

Over the last couple years, her work has no longer been required to support her financially and feed her family. In a way this has freed up her work to be more creative and adventurous, as she is no longer worried about the “Brand” Samantha Thompson and needing her work and look to be consistent. Her father was in business and she was able to learn may things about design and branding from him and her older sister who runs a successful design business to this day.

This sudden awakening has been refreshing and also frightening for Samantha, as she find’s myself no longer restrained by the need to be commercially successful. Samantha’s work has taken on an edge of free falling, experimentations in media and subject from still lives in textiles, etchings with mixed media, and reduction linocut and photography. Samantha is searching for the right media to express herself and this has no restrictions.

her last solo exhibition featured reduction linocut on paper, exploring feminist themes and history, she exhibited this collection in Japan, U.K. and Melbourne. Samantha is currently working on her 14th solo exhibition at Tatic Contempory Art, Melbourne in 2019.

“I live in semi-rural Victoria with my family, 30 mins from Geelong and 90 Mins from Melbourne. The country, my family, travel and history are a never-ending source of inspiration for my life and work.”
