BIOGRAPHY – Samantha Thompson (nee Biddle)

Born 1978 - Sydney, Australia (Parents from CA, USA)

Born from a mother that has great comical expression and a great eye for colour, and a family history steeped in storytelling, Samantha’s style bends neatly into these two restrains. Despite her best efforts, she can make no marks that don’t reflect this collective gene pool. Her work has developed over 20 +years of professional practice from large scale pastel works celebrating the female form with attitude, to big works in oil and acrylic on canvas. Woven into these years she has worked with textiles and printmaking and indulged in mixed media.

Samantha is the fifth child of American immigrants, who several generations before where first founders in America. A continual source of interest and inspiration for her practice, Samantha enjoys discovering her family ties and stories. Her heritage stems from Luxemburg, Germany and Dutch on her fathers side and German, Dutch, Irish on her Mothers before they immigrated to The United States. Her parents settled in Melbourne after several years floating, and continued business in the rags trade, in central Melbourne. Being raised in her parents retail bridal store had a profound impact on her, working with her family in such a female dominated industry paved the way for a lifetime interest in feminism and activism.

After finding love in London as a young women, Samantha settled in New Zealand (Napier) to start a family. The Art deco Capital of the world reignited Samantha passion for The Art Deco period and her art practice begun, spurred on by the colorful city. After moving back to Melbourne Samantha continued her art and started exhibiting regularly in and around St Kilda, while working in the design industry. Her work reflected the buzz of Melbourne and was playful and bold. Operating a successful Gallery and studio in ST Kilda for 10 years, Samantha longed for more space and exposure to nature. Moving to Geelong then Lethbridge has fulfilled this wish in the last several years.

The change of scenery triggered new work, new medias and her work changed dramatically. Continuing to exhibit works, and managing her practice, Samantha started working with community’s in her rural area. At this time Samantha also started supporting artists with professional development, which contributed to starting an artist co op in 2016 based in Meredith. A passionate supported of rural arts, Samantha continues to produce yearly exhibitions (Internationally and Nationally), run community arts events, work with youth and children and raise her 3 boys from her country home.

Her last solo exhibition featured reduction linocut on paper, exploring feminist themes and history, she exhibited this collection in Japan, U.K. and Melbourne. Samantha is currently working on her 15th solo exhibition at Tactic Contemporary Art, Melbourne in 2019.

“I live in semi-rural Victoria with my family, creating from my studio, the country, my family, travel and history are a never-ending source of inspiration for my life and work.”
