Stuck within the incestuous and often contradictory “Stupid-Ass” Art-Industry, Samantha Thompson finds herself constrained by commercial success, artistic bias and ‘award seeking A-holes’. Embittered by the very cycle that has defined her, Samantha seeks an identity beyond Gallery white walls, double-spaced room sheets and the eternal ‘What’s your inspiration?’.

“The sale of my work is a wholly physical concern, if I had the space, I’d never sell a work.”

Commercial success is an organic process for Samantha. Each sale makes room within the sprawling tree of her oeuvre. Each piece, a new expression within her visual vocabulary.

“I’m sick of the divide between commercial artists, who sell work, and critically acclaimed artists, who receive nothing but a place in the stratosphere of accolade. What is art really? Does it have to be ugly, thought provoking or grotesque? Must it solve world peace? Bring reason to our universe? I don’t think so.”

Any grand sociological role that art fulfills is wholly invented, imbued with meaning man-made. Her inspiration has no meaning and nor is one given to it. Samantha’s work is a transposition of the aesthetic, of her perspective and of the personal, it is in its purest form, expression.

“When I think about it, the only reason I created work was because I started selling pieces. I always created of course, but had I not been invited to stick a piece in some upmarket St Kilda café, I would never have considered it.”

As Samantha begins to separate herself from a twenty year long commercial career in art. A career reminiscent more of a physical trade than any provocative artistic expression, she again returns to the regenerative, naturalistic workflow that drives her, torching the forest of artistic and commercial drudgery and reinventing herself and her medium from rural Victoria, Australia.
